January 2008

Dear Admissions Director:

You are cordially invited to participate in the Eighteenth Annual Latino College Expo!

Date: Saturday, April 12, 2008
Place: Borough of Manhattan Community College, New York City
Time: 12:00pm to 4:00pm

In 1990, the idea to provide to a community that was not yet aware it would become the largest minority group, not only in New York City but, in the nation was insightful. For the past eighteen years the Latino College Expo has become synonymous with providing access and opportunity to the Latino community in the metropolitan area. Year after year, the Expo attracts approximately 800 to 1,000 Latino high school students from New York City’s five boroughs, as well as from Westchester, Rockland Counties, New Jersey and, Long Island; this is an incredible number when you consider that the Latino College Expo occurs on a Saturday.

This is a testament not only to the youth’s educational aspirations but also, to the cooperation and support we have received from college advisors and community leaders throughout the metropolitan area high schools in promoting the Expo. The purpose of the Latino College Expo is to foster the educational aspirations of New York City’s Latino youth by way of annual college fair and specialized services.

But its true testament of sustainability has been the support of the many colleges and universities that have registered and experienced first hand the uniqueness of this event. There is a commitment and love related to this event as it has provided to a community of people since 1990. The colleges and universities have dedicated their support and that has sustained our existence. It is now a tradition that takes place every April. The city has embraced us and looks forward to this event every year. We face challenges every year to sustain and continue this event and since this is a “labor of love”, we are constantly looking to improve our event.

This year we have taken into consideration the Independent School calendar to attract more students from independent boarding and day schools, as well as parochial and public schools. We are also excited to be partnered with the New York Knickerbockers again in providing the scholarships for 5 deserving seniors. As in the past, we are partnered with a number of media contacts (N.Y. Daly News, El Diario, Next Step Magazine, ABC TV, MSG Network, and Univision (Channel 47) to promote the event more effectively and increase the interest to attend the Latino College Expo well beyond the five boroughs. We are also in discussion to have a “well known artist/group”, which will perform after the event for all those in attendance. This surely will add to our visibility to further increase our attendance. More details will follow, along with an agenda upon receiving your registration confirmation.

Finally, we have changed our venue and this year’s event will take place at the Borough of Manhattan Community College of the City University of New York in lower Manhattan, which happens to be the 1st location that the Latino College Expo took place in 1990. During the fair we will be providing you with homemade Latino Cuisine in order to keep you well energized for the large crowd we anticipate.

We look forward to you completing the registration form and secure your space to this event, which embodies the eclectic fabric of New York City and has become a mainstay within the communities that you reach out to share information about your institutions.
